On my bed, sitting criss-cross-applesauce during nap time, notebooks and pens scattered across the bedspread.
On the couch after the kids go to bed, tapping away on the keyboard past midnight.
In an apartment in Japan, making sense of life with two littles.
At the kitchen table, trying to ignore the crumbs and sticky spots left behind after dinner.
At a desk with Yo-Yo Ma in my earbuds.
In a rental home in Virginia, staring at deer in the backyard.
In a hotel room on a one-night solo staycation.
At my favorite coffee shops, sipping on a steaming drink.
In the shower, holding words in my head to keep them from swirling down the drain.
On the patio of our Las Vegas home, fueled by January sunshine.
In a green chair in the middle of the night, making notes on my phone while breastfeeding.
On a walk, stringing together sentences in my mind while listening to the trees, the birds, & the neighbors.
In the minivan, sitting in a grocery store parking lot.
At a tiny desk in a fifth-grade classroom in Michigan, weaving tall tales and poems.
In a dorm room in East Lansing, when I wasn’t distracted by AIM or shenanigans down the hall.
In the silent law library on campus, trying not to breathe too loudly.
On a park bench, watching a game of pick-up soccer.
In Spain, writing Spanglish in my journal en el centro de la ciudad.
In a hostel in Paris the summer after student teaching.
On airplanes, slicing through wisps of clouds,
surrounded by the dark on underground grains,
& everywhere in between.

Lovely images and words, friend. I can see it all, and have been in the rocking chair and coffee shops and the kitchen table writing, too. This is a great stanza: “In the shower, holding words in my head to keep them from swirling down the drain.” To writing!
